Skill ≠ Leadership: The Fastest Way to Kill a Goal Is to Put It in the Wrong Hands
Hello Fellow Goal Accomplishers,
I wrote about this in a Forbes Expert Panel today, and I’m bringing it here because it applies to real life just as much as it does to business:
A goal doesn’t fail because the goal was too big.
It fails because the wrong person was leading it.
And “wrong” doesn’t mean incompetent.
It means unprepared for what leading a goal actually requires.
People assume leadership is a natural extension of talent.
It’s not.
Being good at the work is not the same as knowing how to guide it, direct it, sequence it, or manage the decisions required to finish it.
Here’s how this plays out everywhere — in companies, in entrepreneurship, and inside your personal goals:
1. Companies promote people because they performed well — not because they can lead.
Someone exceeds their KPIs.
Someone crushes their metrics.
Someone is “the best” at the task.
And suddenly they’re promoted into a role that requires:
- direction
- judgment
- prioritization
- long-term thinking
- hard decisions
- strategic pacing
…none of which they’ve been trained in.
Now they’re leading a goal they don’t know how to structure — and the fallout hits the whole team.
Most corporate goal breakdowns come from this exact gap:
the person in charge was promoted for skill, not leadership.
2. Founders confuse technical excellence with operational judgment.
A founder who is brilliant at their craft starts a company — and then struggles the moment the goal becomes bigger than their personal ability to “just work harder.”
They:
- don’t know how to protect the sequence
- don’t want to let go of control
- micromanage the support they hire
- change direction too often or not soon enough
- make emotional decisions instead of operational ones
And then they wonder why progress feels heavy or chaotic.
They’re great at the thing.
But leading the goal requires a different skill entirely.
This is why founders hire COOs.
And it’s why they’re shocked at how much easier everything becomes once someone who understands execution takes the wheel.
3. Individuals do this to themselves, too.
You can have ambition.
You can have drive.
You can be excellent at the actual work.
And still never accomplish a goal — not because you’re incapable, but because you were trying to lead something you were only trained to perform.
Leading a goal requires you to:
- define what “done” actually means
- sequence the work correctly
- choose the right pace
- make decisions based on reality, not emotion
- stay aware and adjust without starting over
Most people were never taught this anywhere.
So they rely on willpower, motivation, or perfectionism — instead of real direction.
4. Skill gets you started. Leadership gets you finished.
A goal is a project.
A goal is an operation.
A goal requires judgment — not just effort.
When the wrong person is leading it, you’ll see patterns like:
- unnecessary delays
- repeated restarts
- confusion about priorities
- doing easy tasks instead of the right tasks
- trying to move too many things at once
- plans falling apart because they were built out of order
That’s not a “motivation problem.”
That’s a leadership problem.
This is where my work fits in.
I’m Desiree’ Stapleton de González — a Fractional COO, Harvard-certified business strategist, PMP-certified project manager, Six Sigma Black Belt, member of the Forbes Coaches Council, and self-made millionaire.
I’ve built and led execution in environments where outcomes weren’t negotiable.
And that’s exactly why Goal Accomplishment Made Easy™ exists:
to give people access to real execution leadership for their personal and professional goals.
Not hype.
Not motivational talk.
Not vague productivity hacks.
Actual leadership.
Actual sequencing.
Actual decision-making.
Actual structure.
The same way I treat goals inside companies is the same way I treat the goals brought to me inside this program.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Full Program — for people who want real execution support
You bring the goal.
I build the plan.
You execute.
I help you stay on track, adjust when needed, correct the order, tighten the scope, and protect your momentum.
This is for people who want a fair shot at accomplishing something meaningful — with professional-level support behind them.
Goal Plan — for people who want a serious plan to execute independently
You bring the goal.
I break it down into steps, deadlines, and structure.
Clear. Strategic. Usable.
The same way I’d build a plan inside a company.
No guessing.
No overbuilding.
No “figure it out as you go.”
Mini Membership — for people who want weekly decision clarity
If you already have a goal and you need help deciding:
- what matters this week
- what doesn’t matter yet
- what needs adjusting
- what you can release
- how to protect your focus
…the Mini Membership gives you that support through logic-based check-ins I designed.
No plan.
No task lists.
Just weekly clarity — so you don’t get lost in your own ambition.
Final thought
Talent is everywhere.
Skill is everywhere.
But leadership — real leadership — the kind that takes a goal from idea to completion?
That is rare.
And most people don’t fail because they lack discipline.
They fail because they were never shown how to lead a goal the way a project manager, strategist, or operator would.
That’s what I bring.
That’s what this ecosystem exists to provide.
If you’re ready for support that actually moves your goals forward, you can explore every option here:
