Don’t Let These Gigs Chew You Up and Spit You Out: From a Retired COO
I’ve been in rooms where I was the most qualified person and the least paid. I’ve been brought in to fix what someone else broke and handed half the credit when it worked. I’ve watched organizations consume talented people and move on like it was nothing.
And I’ve done it myself — taken the engagement, delivered everything I said I would, and walked away with a check and the kind that took a minute to shake.
So when I say don’t let these gigs chew you up and spit you out — I’m not being dramatic. I’m being specific.
What “Chewed Up” Actually Looks Like
It doesn’t always look like a toxic workplace or a terrible boss. Sometimes it looks like a perfectly fine engagement that slowly becomes your whole life. You’re delivering. They’re happy. But your own goals — the ones you said you were going to work on, the business you were going to build, the thing you actually wanted — those are collecting dust.
You tell yourself it’s temporary. You’ll focus on your stuff once this project wraps. Once the quarter ends. Once things slow down.
They don’t slow down. That’s not how it works.
What I Learned the Hard Way
Your goals need the same attention you give your clients. The same structure. The same weekly check-in. The same honest assessment of whether things are on track.
Because if you’re not actively working toward your own finish line, you’re working toward someone else’s. And they will happily let you.
The gig will always need more. The client will always have another ask. The organization will always have another fire. None of that stops unless you decide your goals are non-negotiable too.
The Decision
I retired from COO work because I finally got honest with myself. I was exceptional at helping other people accomplish their goals. I needed to become just as serious about my own.
Goal Accomplishment Made Easy™ came out of that decision. It’s the plan I built for myself — and then built into a tool so nobody else has to figure it out the hard way.
Your goals deserve a real plan. Not the leftover time after everyone else gets the best of you.
Don’t wait until you’re tired to figure that out.
