Confidence Is a Terrible Strategy
A lot of people are waiting for confidence.
They’re waiting to feel ready.
Waiting to know enough.
Waiting to feel certain.
And because they don’t feel certain, they don’t move.
But confidence is a terrible strategy.
Because confidence is usually the result of doing something.
Not the requirement for starting.
Think about the first time you did anything important in your life.
Your first job.
Your first presentation.
Your first big decision.
You probably weren’t confident.
You were learning.
Confidence came later.
After repetition.
After mistakes.
After proof.
Somewhere along the way, we started believing successful people have a feeling that the rest of us don’t.
They don’t.
They just have more evidence.
They’ve collected proof that they can figure things out.
And that proof changes how they approach challenges.
The biggest mistake people make is waiting for a feeling that only comes after action.
It’s like saying, “I’ll start exercising when I’m in shape.”
That is backwards.
You get in shape because you started.
The same thing applies to goals.
You become capable by attempting things that require capability.
You become confident by surviving situations that once made you uncomfortable.
The first version of anything is supposed to feel uncertain.
That’s not a sign you shouldn’t do it.
That’s the experience of doing something you’ve never done.
The people who accomplish big things aren’t fearless.
They just stopped treating fear as a stop sign.
They started treating it as information.
“I’m nervous.”
Okay.
“What does that mean?”
Usually it means something matters.
The goal isn’t to eliminate uncertainty.
The goal is to build the ability to operate inside it.
Because the bigger the goal, the less likely you are to have a perfect roadmap.
At some point, every ambitious person has to become comfortable making decisions with incomplete information.
That’s not recklessness.
That’s leadership.
Confidence is nice.
But capability is better.
And capability is built.
One uncomfortable decision at a time.
